Mabou. 7-km (4.5 mi) trail from coal mines to Sight Point (near Inverness), connecting with another trail system. Overlooking Mabou and the ocean. Open seasonally.

Cape Breton Highlands National Park

26 trails ranging from easy 20-minute strolls to challenging climbs offering panoramic view of canyons, the highlands, and seacoasts. Some are wheelchair-accessible. The trails explore various habitats in natural wilderness and our cultural history. Open year-round.

Cape Auguet Eco-trail

Isle Madame. 8-km (5-mi) trail along rocky coastline overlooking Chedabucto Bay: dramatic lookoffs, glimpses of shipwrecks, sites of early Acadian homes, whale- and birdwatching. Open seasonally.

Centennial Woodland Trails

Near Port Hawkesbury. 2.4 km (1.5 mi) of walking trails and 5 km (3 mi) of hiking trails, established by Stora Enso. Panoramic view of the Strait of Canso. Trail maps are available. Open year-round.

Two Rivers Wildlife Park

Near Marion Bridge. Short loop, 2.4 km (1.5 mi), has interpretation; long loop, additional 1.7 km (1 mi), leads through a wide variety of woodlands rich in history and wildlife. Park admission fee. Open seasonally.

Delap's Cove Wilderness Trail

A two-trail system with walks along Bay of Fundy shore: Charlie’s Trail, 1.9-km (1.4-mi) through mixed woodlands, including several look-offs and old stone foundations; Bohaker Trail, 2.2 km (1.6 mi); spectacular waterfall. Toilets, picnic tables. Open seasonally.

Kejimkujik National Park

Short hiking trails (500 m/yd to 6 km (4 mi)), through woodlands and beside rivers and lakes (some with interpretive panels); long-distance hiking trails to remote regions of the park, with wilderness campsites. Open year-round (reduced services in O/S).

Mickey Hill Pocket Wilderness

The Bowater Mersey Paper Company provides and maintains gravelled trails, with boardwalks in rough areas and steep staircases through rocks. Trails marked with nature interpretive signs; suspension bridge. Picnic area on river; unsupervised beach on lake; toilets. Cross-country skiing in winter. Open year-round.

Old Mill Trail

South Farmington. Trail provides benches, picnic tables, & bridges throughout 2.2 acres along the banks of the Annapolis River. Open seasonally.

Amherst Point Bird Sanctuary

A series of walking trails leading to viewing platforms above the marsh. View many types of migrating song birds, water fowl and birds of prey. Open year-round.

Cobequid Escarpment Trail

Economy. Trailhead 7 km (4.5 mi) along the River Philip Rd. Wilderness-standard 2.5-km (1.5-mi) trail crosses Economy River above the falls, follows east side of river downstream, crosses river again and returns to main stairs via Devil’s Bend Trail. Open seasonally.

Economy. Moderate to challenging 6-km (4-mi) hiking trail (one way) along the Economy River, leading to stairs to Economy Falls. Lookoffs on sandstone cliffs. Open seasonally.

Economy Falls Trail

Economy. 7.5 km (4.5 mi) along the River Philip Rd., then a 1-km (0.5-mi) hike (one way) along an old woods road to stairs into a deep gorge where a natural geological phenomenon has occurred in the collapse of a 20-m (65-ft) waterfall. Inquire at Cobequid Interpretive Centre. Open Jun 1–Nov 30.

Fox Point Lookoff & Walking Trail

Rte 209 near Port Greville; about 10 km (6 mi) from Parrsboro. A scenic shore walking trail with lookoffs, interpretive site, and picnic area. Easy access to beach. Open year-round.

Kenomee Canyon Trail

Economy. Challenging 18-km (11-mi) return hiking trail into the Economy River Wilderness Area along the edge of the Economy River Gorge. One of the few wilderness-standard treks in NS. Register at Cobequid Interpretive Centre. Open seasonally.

Partridge Island Lookoff and Hiking Trail

1.5-km (1-mi) hiking trail and lookoff about 3 km (2 mi) from Main St in Parrsboro. Picnic area, interpretive site, lookoff tower with view of Blomidon, Cape Split and Spencer’s Island. Open year-round.

Hemlock Ravine

Kent Ave, off the Bedford Highway. A 7-km (4.5-mi) hard-surfaced trail, partially wheelchair-accessible, along a ravine through forest. Features 350-year-old hemlock stands, a variety of birds and wildflowers, and a heart-shaped pond. Open year-round.

Point Pleasant Park

Point Pleasant Dr, Halifax. 186-acre wooded park crisscrossed with wide paths, many wheelchair-accessible. There are ruins of early fortifications.

Shubenacadie Canal Park

Jaybee Dr or Locks Rd off Waverley Rd, Dartmouth. Hard-surfaced loop trails, up to 2.5 km (1.5 mi) in length, through woods along the sides of the Shubenacadie Canal. These trails connect with a multi-use trail (hard-surfaced and asphalt) which goes from Sullivan’s Pond along Lake Banook and Lake Micmac, ending at Lake Charles. Partially wheelchair-accessible. Open seasonally.

Jordan River Trails

2.5-km (1.5-mi) walking trail along abandoned rail line that crosses the Jordan River and passes alongside salt marsh. Brochures available. Open seasonally.

Kejimkujik Seaside Adjunct

2 hiking trails, 8 km (5 mi) total, across open headlands, to rocky shores with gravel and sandy beaches. Protected area with excellent opportunities to spot seals and seabirds; spectacular views. Interpretation exhibits; picnic tables; toilets. Partially wheelchair-accessible. Open seasonally.

Old CNR Walking Trail

Lockeport. 4-km (2.5-mi) walk along boardwalk, sand dunes and salt marsh, with views of traditional Cape Island fishing boats, birds. Interpretative signage. Brochures available. Open seasonally.

Ovens Natural Park

10 minutes southwest of Lunenburg on Rte 332. Dramatic cliff-top trail leading to series of sea caves, 1.5 km (1 mi) round-trip trail. Rugged coastline. Additional trails. Picnic areas, restaurant, shop, museum. Admission charged. MC, VS. Open May 15-Oct 15.

Barrenland Trail

From Queensport to Cole Harbour, on an old road through the Canso Coastal Barren Protected Wilderness Area. Woodlands, lakes, marshes, and a spectacular view of "nature's sculpture garden" from a 130-m (400-ft) elevation. Open seasonally.

Chapel Gully Trail

Canso. A short walking loop around a saltwater/freshwater estuary, a 43-m (139-ft) bridge over Chapel Gully, and a full 2- to 3-hr hike along shoreline and through beautiful woodland. Brochure available. Open seasonally.

Liscomb River Trail System

Liscomb Mills. Over 20 km (12 mi) of hiking trails, from 1 km to 9.5 km; features inland & coastal hiking, waterfalls, fish ladder and swinging bridge. Open May 1-Oct 30.

Port Bickerton Lighthouse Beach Trail

Rte 211, 30 min from Sherbrooke Village. Boardwalk meandering through interesting flora and fauna to sandy beach. Swimming; panoramic views of the ocean. Open seasonally.

Antigonish Landing Trail
- Sunrise Trail, NS


Antigonish. A 4-km (2.5-mi) return hike along an estuary of Antigonish Harbour, on the outskirts of town. An elevated platform offers an unobstructed view of the osprey, eagles & ducks in the wildlife sanctuary. Open seasonally.

Cape George Hiking Trail

Cape George. Rte 337. A series of connected loops, varying in length and difficulty (total 33 km/20 mi), from the coast through meadows and old-growth forests to cliffs affording panoramic views of the bay. 3 serviced trail heads: Cape George Heritage School, Cape George Point Lighthouse, Ballantyne’s Cove Tuna Interpretive Centre. Open May 1-Nov 30.

Fairmont Ridge Hiking Trail

Rte 337, 9 km (5.5 mi) from Antigonish. 6 stacked loop trails overlooking Antigonish Harbour, from 20-min stroll to 4-hr hike through old-growth forest past brooks, beaver pond; abundant wildlife. Open year-round.

Samson & Albion Trails
- Sunrise Trail, NS


New Glasgow. 8-km (1.5-mi) walking trail beside the East River, along the route of the first iron-steel railway in Canada. Benches, picnic tables, antique-style lighting. Open year-round.

Wallace Bay Nature/Wildlife Trail
- Sunrise Trail, NS
