Basin Head tells the story of the Province's historic inshore fishery
through its displays and artifacts. On site are dioramas illustrating
methods and materials, small-craft displays and a coastal ecology
exhibit. A boardwalk features access to a magnificent white sand beach,
giftshops, food and beach services and a children's play village.
Beaconsfield Historic House is one of the Island's finest residential
buildings. Built in 1877 for James Peake, Jr., a wealthy shipbuilder
and merchant, Beaconsfield was a visible expression of Peake's social
and economic standing. This elegant home, with its mansard roof, elaborate
gingerbread trim and crowning belvedere, stands as an enduring symbol
of Victorian elegance.
For many years Elmira Station served as the end of the line for Prince
Edward Island's railway. Today, displays of photographs, maps and
artifacts, a recreated station master's office and ladies' waiting
room recount the fascinating story of railroading on the Island.
Eptek National Exhibition Centre offers a diverse array of exhibits
and programs featuring themes dedicated to history, science and the
fine arts. In the winter months, Eptek Centre is the home of a permanent
collection of paintings by the late Island artist, Dr. Georgie Read
Barton.
Through audio-visual presentations, permanent and temporary exhibits
and genealogy resources, the Acadian Museum provides visitors an opportunity
to discover treasures related to the Acadians' three hundred year
presence on the Island.
At the heart of Prince Edward Island is its agricultural heritage.
The special magic of Orwell Corner allows visitors to experience the
mood, flavour, charm and activities of a small agricultural crossroads
community of the 1890s. While at Orwell Corner you can visit the blacksmith's
shop, general store, house and barns, stroll through the gardens or
have a picnic outside the old schoolhouse.
Green Park Shipbuilding Museum traces the history of the once mighty
shipbuilding industry and offers visitors a glimpse of a by-gone era
through the restored Victorian rooms of the Historic Yeo House. Located
in Port Hill, (near Tyne Valley in Prince County), Green Park was
the home and site of a shipyard owned and operated by James Yeo who
was considered to be the richest and most influential man in the colony.
